Research categories are used to build thematic groups of presentations for the conference programme. Moreover, they serve as a basis for the assignement of contributions to reviewers. Authors give up to three research domain, one grade level, and one research method for their contributions. Reviewers indicate which kinds of research they are willing to review primarily. The following research categories are currently used in PME conferences:

Grade levels
01 Pre-School (age under 7, and teachers of this grade level)
02 Elementary (age 5-12, and teachers of this grade level)
03 Secondary ( age 10-18, and teachers of this grade level)
04 Post Secondary (age 16+, and teachers of this grade level)
05 Vocational education (and teachers of this grade level)
06 Adult education and out-of-school mathematics (and teachers in these contexts)
